Short Bio

Aloria Weaver is an internationally-recognized oil painter, stained glass artist, art instructor and curator with nearly thirty years of experience in arts-based business.

Statement

"My work is rooted in symbolism, history, mythology and tradition. I recognize originality as a return to the binary origins of life: Nature and Geometry. It is this understanding which enables me to create contemporary art through living traditions. Through my work, I explore the intersections of humanity and nature, culture and tradition, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, religion and spirituality.

Through engaging with slow, deliberate processes, utilizing materials that come directly from the Earth, I connect to my origins, both literally through physical contact with the substance, and symbolically, through my emulation of the creative processes of nature. Careful practice and devotion to handmade craft necessitates a return to a sustainable pace, while the use of traditional materials serves as a means for reconnection to nature.

As a contemporary artist participating in a living craft, I strive to communicate with the spirit in my materials, seeking a state of oneness. Technique manifests as a dialog with the elements and an acknowledgement of the delicate web of interdependence that unites humankind with all of life. The single-pointed focus "of attention on the creative act becomes an observance; a contemplation of the celestial order of the living universe and an expression of reverence for our home within it."

Biography

Aloria Weaver was born in 1979 in Buffalo, New York. She began oil painting in 1993 as an apprentice to several professional artists at the Buffalo Arts Studio of Western New York under the mentorship of its founder and director, Joanna Angie (an oil painter influenced by Tibetan Buddhism). She later studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, then at Buffalo State College and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Weaver completed her postgraduate studies at the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in London, earning a master’s degree in Traditional Arts with distinction. There, she was initiated into a number of sacred arts and architectural craft lineages, including Islamic geometry, medieval stained glass, gilding, ceramic tile, stone carving and parquetry. Weaver holds a remarkable number of traditional lineages, including:

• Atelier training in the sight-size method of classical realism with alumni of the Florence Academy of Art in Italy
• Italian egg tempera icon painting and gilding with Fred Wessel, through an unbroken transmission from master to student dating back to Fra Angelico in 1430
• Russo-Byzantine egg tempera icon painting and gilding with Irina Bradley
Mischtechnik (mixed-technique), an indirect process of painting with egg tempera and oil glazes, as taught by Ernst Fuchs, one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.

Since the late 1990’s, Weaver has acted as guest curator for galleries from New York to Colorado to Washington, as well as in Vienna, Austria and in London, UK. Weaver has traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe, painting, teaching, exhibiting and giving lectures and presentations. For three years, she was an instructor at the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art in Austria (the world’s first international school for Visionary Art) and the Academy’s summer program in Italy. She is the CEO of SOMA, Organic Artist Elixirs, the Executive Director of Luminous Flux Gallery & Studios and has taught private art intensives nationally and internationally since 2011.
